Halloween in Valdichiana Senese

"Scary" experiences among caves, tunnels and crypts

Autumn brings with it a sense of quiet. The leafy branches of the trees are now close to the height of their foliage, and the colours the rolling Tuscan hills of the Valdichiana Senese makes them even more fascinating. At this time of year, a sinister and gloomy atmosphere suddenly arrives, haunting the houses and streets of the local villages as a fog envelops the palaces and centuries-old buildings, leaving only their tops to be seen as they hide the Tuscan valleys and cover the lands of the Valdichiana Senese under a grey and ghostly sea. The autumn stillness leaves plenty of room for terror: Halloween has arrived, the darkest time of the year due to the grim costumes and the frightening decorations of the houses and streets.

The Valdichiana Senese offers you a myriad of mysterious places where you can savour the thrill of being afraid while immersed in the natural wonders of caves, tunnels, crypts and much more.

Discover the beauty of the underground tunnels of Sinalunga that are dug deep into the streets, reaching almost 30 meters. The unique Halloween atmosphere brings you to the hellish depths of the village, making you feel like you're in a a spooky thriller. Your “Charon” is a local expert archaeologist who will guide you throughout the journey, ferrying you along the route.

The layout of the tunnels is similar to the "bottini" of Siena, and stretches about 250 meters underground. You can then "recover" from this fearful experience thanks to the beauties of the villages of Sinalunga and Torrita di Siena, a historic military outpost during the Middle Ages.

Halloween is the ideal opportunity for fans of the Twilight saga and more: the main scenes of the aforementioned film were shot within the walls of the village of Montepulciano, in the piazza packed with red drapes with figures also dressed in red. You will be able to closely observe the Town Hall, where the vampire Edward Cullen came out for a few moments before being saved by his beloved. There are, of course, other locations occupied by vampires, deep in the atmosphere that only Halloween gives.

The strong presence of the Etruscans in the Valdichiana Senese area makes this location particularly fascinating. The area is rich in legacies of the ancient people who wisely formed these lands, giving them the appearance that they still have today. Among the numerous Etruscan remains, there are museums, works and above all tombs and necropolises that maintain their charm and melancholic and slightly gloomy air, ideal to visit during Halloween.
