"ELBA: Napoleon's Legacy", a webseries made in Tuscany

In 2014, Elba Island celebrates the bicentennial of Napoleon Bonaparte’s arrival with countless initiatives. From the beginning, the Tourism Board of Elba decided to make a creative short movie to promote the natural, artistic and historical attractions of the island honoring the Napoleon's stay on Elba. The authors of "ELBA: Napoleon's Legacy" are I Licaoni, a group of independent Tuscany-born filmmakers specialized in the creation and distribution of imaginative videos and films. This web-series is an innovative storytelling project that narrates the soul Elba islands and its people (official hashtag #elbamovie).

The movie is divided into four eight minutes long webisodes, the web-series has been uploaded on YouTube step-by-step and now all the episodes are finally online. The narrative is based on two main elements:

  • Past and present: the plot slides back and forth between the past and the present, giving the audience a taste of the Napoleonic experience but in a contemporary setting.
  • Reality and fiction: the line between reality and fiction is clear, this isn't a 'historical' movie. The characters and the story are imaginary, but their life experiences on the Island, their connections and the locations are real.

“It’s a new approach to tourism storytelling, in which the destination is the hub of an experiential narrative, and we believe that adventure lovers will love it. Working with I Licaoni has been very stimulating: we have integrated our skills of tourist experience design with their great cinematic expertise, to produce an original and innovative product. The idea was born with the celebration of the Bicentennial of Napoleon’s disembarkation, when he was exiled to the Island. We wanted to combine a strong tourist promotion asset with the creativity that a personality like Napoleon can unleash in the imagination of people all around the world. The goal is to create a high profile, captivating and fascinating promotion – aimed at a very attentive audience – while at the same time highlighting the resources and great professional skills of this territory”, explained Andrea Rossi, Social Media & Marketing Manager for Elba.

“We really believe a lot in this project. We decided to work together with independent video makers to promote a story of independence, in harmony with the communication about the Elba Island, which is based on an "independent lifestyle’” noted Maurizio Goetz, Destination Manager of Elba.
