For centuries chestnuts were a staple food of the inhabitants of the Tuscan mountains, due to its versatility and the high level of calories they provide. That's why many villages still celebrate the fall season with special dishes made with chestnuts and big festivals. As the weather in Tuscany provides a mild autumn, with plenty of sunny days, what could be better than an outdoor tour! Here are some of the best chestnut events scheduled for this Autumn in Tuscany (2017 dates):

Chestnut festival in the Mugello (Firenze area) - October 8, 15, 22 and 29

Street bands and plenty of food including local delicacies such as ravioli, cakes, jams, marrons glacés and roasted chestnuts. Lovers of steam trains can also arrive in the old train that connects Florence to Marradi. More info (in Italian) here.

Crastatone festival in Piancastagnaio (Siena area) - October 27 to November 1st

The Monte Amiata area offers an extensive calendar of chestnut festivals. The oldest is the Crastatone, held from October 28 to November 1 in Piancastagnaio, and which is filled with traditional dishes, music and dancing in the streets, reliving the atmosphere of an authentic rural village. The festival takes place within the town’s medieval city walls, the Rocca Aldobrandesca, which encircle the old town centre. Food stalls are set up in the streets and alleyways, serving food made from chestnuts. More info (in Italian) here.

Chestnut festival of Arcidosso (Siena area) - October 13, 14, 15, 20, 21 and 22

The Chestnut Festival of Arcidosso is held from October 13 to 22 with food stands in the old town and special cellars openings. More info (in Italian) here.

Chestnut festival in Caprese Michelangelo (Arezzo area)- Last two weekends of October

Caprese Michelangelo, the birthplace of Michelangelo Buonarroti, will host the Chestnut Festival on October 14,15 and 21, 22. On the streets of the old town and in the square of the Castle overlooking the village, visitors can taste and buy roasted chestnuts, mulled wine, donuts, jams and sweet chestnut polenta. Mushrooms and chestnut fest in Vivo D’Orcia (Siena area) - October 8, 14 and 15

Vivo d’ Orcia celebrates the Mushrooms and the chestnut fest on the second and third weekends of October with a multitude of specialties made using local mushrooms. You can expect to see many food markets and mushrooms exhibitions at the festival.

Autumn Festival in Abbadia San Salvatore (Siena area)- October 6,7, 8 and 13, 14, 15

The medieval town of Abbadia San Salvatore extends along the eastern slopes of the Monte Amiata. Each year on the second and third weekends of October, there’s the Autumn festival: an entertaining exhibition of local artists and kiosks selling traditional local dishes.
