Sagra del Buco Unto

Taking place on November 7 and 8 in Civitella Marittima is the Sagra del Buco Unto, a festival dedicated to typical Maremma flavors that pays homage to two of the most popular local products: Vino Novello and Olio Nuovo (new-season wine and just-pressed oil). 

Markets with a bevy of handicrafts, food stands, games, shows and live music color Civitella Marittima during this historic event with such a distinctive name.

In fact, Buco Unto refers to the inhabitant of Civitella, known in the past for always getting about in pants with a stain on the backside. 
This bizarre trait was due to the way shoes were cleaned with suet, a type of grease. When kneeling in church during mass, the heel of the shoes would come into contact with the back of his pants, leaving a mark right on his rear.
