Marciana and Monte Capanne

Perched on the slopes of Monte Capanne, Marciana is one of the oldest villages on Elba Island. Strolling along the narrow streets with your dog allows you to discover scenic views and historical landmarks that tell the story of the island’s past.

A stand-out among these is the Fortezza Pisana, built in the 12ᵗʰ century to defend the territory from pirate raids. You can also visit the fortress’ external area with your pet, where you’ll enjoy a picturesque view of the village and landscape in the surrounds. Marciana is likewise the starting point for the trails leading to Monte Capanne, passing through some of the island’s most fascinating natural landscapes.

Capoliveri and Monte Calamita

Steps in Capoliveri

Overlooking the southern coast of Elba, Capoliveri is a lively and charming village girt by trails winding between the sea and Mediterranean scrub.

Not far from the historic center lies Monte Calamita, an area known for its spectacular views and rich mining history. The trails that snake through this territory allow you to explore ancient mining sites, landscapes shaped by mining and scenic viewpoints overlooking the sea. Dogs on a leash may accompany their owners along the trails and into the outdoor areas of the mining complex, making the visit an opportunity to combine nature, history and time spent in the open air.

The Sentiero della Salute (Health Trail) is a pleasant 1.9-mile or 3-kilometer walk through the Mediterranean scrub along one of the most scenic stretches of the northern coast of Elba Island. Starting from the Procchio beach, the route offers stunning views of the sea and winds through a natural setting rich in scents and the vegetation typical of Mediterranean scrub.

The trail is only accessible as far as the final tunnel, which is currently closed, thus you must return along the same hiking route.

Before your visit, it is advisable to check for any updates on the trail’s accessibility.

This walk is suitable for the whole family as you discover one of the most picturesque spots on the island’s east coast. Along the route, scenic viewpoints, Mediterranean vegetation and views of the gulf alternate, offering a relaxing experience that you can also enjoy with your pet.

On the western side of the island, the route connecting Marciana Marina to Sant’Andrea (Trail 150) takes you through particularly picturesque landscapes, including cliffs, Mediterranean scrub and sweeping views of the sea.

This itinerary allows you to discover one of the most authentic areas of Elba, characterized by well-preserved natural landscapes and a close connection between the coastal environment and the inland region. Ideal for those who love walking with their dog surrounded by nature.

Beaches and relaxation by the sea

Elba Island is a particularly welcoming destination, even for those who want to spend time at the beach with their pet. In addition to the designated areas, there are several stretches of coastline and beach facilities that allow dogs, so you can enjoy the seaside without having to part with your four-legged companion.

Among the best-known spots is the Mola area, near Porto Azzurro, where you’ll find one of the island’s main dog-friendly areas, Dog Beach Mola. In addition to these attractions, numerous public beaches and coastal trails allow visitors to alternate between moments of relaxation and nature walks.

Elba is crisscrossed by an extensive network of trails for visitors to explore the area from ever-changing perspectives. The paths of the Arcipelago Toscano National Park on the island wind through forests, Mediterranean scrub, scenic ridges and ancient connecting paths, offering spectacular views of the sea and the other islands of the archipelago.

There are many trails you can explore with your dog, so long as you follow the park’s rules and be considerate of other visitors.

Among the most picturesque routes are the Capo d’Enfola promontory—a pleasant loop trail that winds through the Mediterranean scrub and past ancient military outposts, offering splendid views of the sea—and the trails of Monte Calamita, where nature intertwines with the island’s mining history. Also not to be missed is the Vista Innamorata – Tenuta delle Ripalte trail for an easy hike that starts at the Museo della Vecchia Officina (Old Workshop Museum) and offers spectacular views of the southern coast, as well as the Viticcio – Forno trail that connects 2 enchanting coves on the northwestern coast via a shaded path surrounded by Mediterranean vegetation.
