Art museums

Chini Museum Borgo San Lorenzo

Mugello is a land of artists and is been the birthplace of famous men, including Giotto and Fra Angelico. 

  • The Chini Museum, in Borgo San Lorenzo, contains an important collection of works by artist Galileo Chini, a leading figure in Italian Liberty style;
  • The House of Giotto, in Vespignano, offers a story made up of images of the works of Giotto, who was born here in 1276;
  • The Fra Angelico Museum of Sacred Art, named after the great painter born in Rupecanina, a district of Vicchio, contains important works of art and sacred objects from churches in the area;
  • The Collection of Sacred Art of Sant'Agata contains several masterpieces like the "Mystic Marriage of St. Catherine" by Neri di Bicci di Lorenzo and two angels by Andrea della Robbia;
  • Spazio Brizzolari is located in Scarperia and is dedicated to the painter Antonio Brizzolari. It is a multidisciplinary space where visitors are guided through a powerful emotional experience.

You can retrace the history of the peoples who have lived in Mugello and the Sieve Valley by visiting the archaeological sites and museums in the area and participating in the two museum-workshops specialized in the prehistoric, ancient and medieval sector. 

  • The Dicomano Archaeological Museum contains an archaeological heritage from Prehistory to the Renaissance period and exhibits a truly unique collection of Etruscan stelae and cippus;
  • The Archaeological Documentation Center of Sant’Agata contains a collection of archaeological finds ranging from Prehistory to the Middle Ages, including the "world's most ancient millstone" with which the most ancient flour was made. Furthermore, a prehistoric village with full-size huts has been reconstructed outside it;
  • The Archaeological Museum of Alto Mugello, in Palazzuolo sul Senio, displays evidence of the presence of man in Alto Mugello, including the "tomb of the warrior" dating back to the 7th-6th centuries BC;
  • The archaeological excavations in Frascole have uncovered the impressive remains of a large Etruscan building still being studied;
  • The MUGOT (Tuscan Gothic Museum), in Ponzalla, preserves the memory of the war events of September 1944 along the Gothic Line between the Futa pass and the Giogo pass. It is also possible to go on an excursion to the battlefield;

Traditions, history and people are described in the following museums:

  • The Museum of the Historical Apennine Landscape, located in the splendid Abbey of Moscheta and surrounded by the enchanting woods of the Giogo-Casaglia complex, offers an in-depth look at the history of the Apennine landscape, with particular reference to the transformations of the vegetation and environmental landscape.
  • The Sant’Agata artisan and rural Museum of Leprino, tells the story of life in the small village of Sant'Agata through the animated figures designed and created by Faliero Lepri, known as Leprino;
  • The Casa d'Erci Rural Civilization Museum tells the story of life in the old rural world, with objects, everyday tools and accurate reconstructions in a large farmhouse located in the green Mugello countryside;
  • The Museum of the Mountain People, in Palazzuolo sul Senio, contains over a thousand objects that tell the story of the local people in the first half of the 20th century;

The museums of excellent local products and productive traditions

  • The Pietra Serena Museum in Firenzuola, contains stonemasons’ tools and artifacts linked to the Pietra Serena mining tradition.
  • The Museum of Cutting Tools, set up inside Palazzo dei Vicari in Scarperia, documents the deep roots of the knife in the history and daily life of the village;
  • The Vine and Wine Museum in Rufina, exhibits the tools used for vine cultivation and wine production and storage, documenting the history of Chianti Rufina;

One ticket, all the museums

You can purchase a Museum Card that allows you to visit all the museums belonging to the Scattered Museum at a reduced price. The offer is valid for one year from the date of purchase of the first ticket. 

Last but not least, there are plenty of activities dedicated to children offered by the system's museums, from workshops and educational activities to the Activity Book, allowing you and your children to play and learn together.
