What to do and see in Donoratico

The specialties of a welcoming town along the Tuscan coast

Donoratico is located halfway between Castagneto Carducci and its Marina. Once known as Bambolo, the hamlet began to develop in 1863, the year the Livorno-Follonica railroad was inaugurated and the train station was built.

In addition to being popular with tourists as an ideal base for visiting the Etruscan Coast and its beaches, other stand-outs are the companies specializing in the construction of racing and recreational boats, a sector that represents one of the region’s manufacturing strengths. Throughout the year, the town offers up services, shops, restaurants and events that enliven daily life, making it a welcoming place for both visitors and residents.

Nature and relaxation

Panoramic view of Marina di Castagneto with farmland and the sea on the horizon
Panoramic view of Marina di Castagneto

Donoratico is located just a short distance from the sea. Indeed, in just a few minutes, you can reach the beach at Marina di Castagneto Carducci, which some people also call Marina di Donoratico.

The coastline is pebbled with a dense pine forest and dotted with numerous lodging facilities, restaurants and other amenities. Whether enjoyed in the free public areas or at an establishment, the beach is perfect for a trip with children and has even been awarded a Blue Flag, the international recognition granted by the FEE (Foundation for Environmental Education).

On a beautiful summer or spring day, you can head to the coast by bike, following the bike path, which is about 1.3 miles or 2 kilometers long. This takes you along a picturesque stretch through the pine forests and olive groves of the surrounding countryside.

Donoratico Castle

The Donoratico Castle or Tower is the landmark that defines the entire hamlet. It was built at the request of the Della Gherardesca family on the ruins of an even older structure, where once stood an Etruscan fortress. The Castle and Church dedicated to Saint Columbanus were destroyed in 1447, during the invasion by Alfonso V of Aragon. Today, visitors can admire the ruins and the tower, which was restored in 1929.

According to legend, this Castle was also home to the famous Count Ugolino della Gherardesca, mentioned by Dante Alighieri in his Inferno

Fun for the whole family

Donoratico is also the ideal destination for those traveling with the whole family. Nestled within the vast pine forest that runs along the beautiful beaches of Marina di Castagneto lies one of the most famous amusement parks in all of Tuscany: the Cavallino Matto! Surrounded by greenery, the park is brimming with playground equipment and attractions, further enlivened by shows to entertain both adults and children.

In Donoratico, you can buy and enjoy typical local products: wine, olive oil, vegetables, fish and meat. In this area, both land-based and seafood cuisine offer delicious dishes, paired with the legendary wines of the Bolgheri DOC area.

Tortelli, pappardelle and tagliolini are made by hand, following an ancient pasta-making tradition. There is also no shortage of dishes made with game, such as wild boar, typical of the cuisine of the Tuscan hinterland, while the most delicious seafood dishes are served in restaurants along the coast.
