Climbing Florence's Duomo, with the huge dome by Filippo Brunelleschi (the largest masonry dome ever built), is one of the most physically challenging activities you can do in the center of Florence (short of walking around all day in flip-flops). Kids love it and adults appreciate the view. It is not for the faint of heart, nor the recently knee-operated! But, already half way through your way to the top, you realize you've made the right choice: the stunning frescos of the interior of the dome - begun by Giorgio Vasari in 1572 and completed by Federico Zuccari, clearly inspired by Michelangelo's Sistine Chapel - are right there, just a few meters over your head!
