Biodola beach, Elba Island

A dive into the beaches of Elba Island

From soft sandy seabeds to coves with sheer cliff faces

Coastlines of soft golden sand or white pebbles brightening the water, cliffs guarding over the blue sea, beaches darkened by iron that makes the sea glimmer ... The beaches of Elba Island are treasures to be discovered. Each is different from the next, with only the clean and scintillating water and a seabed rich in fish for snorkeling enthusiasts in common.

In the Portoferraio area, not to be missed is the Biodola beach with fine soft sand, a shallow seabed and facilities for tourists. Nearby are the less frequented Capobianco, Sottobomba and Samson beaches with a pebbly base.
Not too far from Biodola, near Procchio, is the Paolina beach. This charming quaint pebbly bay is distinguished by a large rock just offshore that you can swim out to. According to legend, Napoleon’s sister Pauline Bonaparte loved to sunbathe on this very beach, sheltered by a pine forest overhanging the sea.

The area of Porto Azzurro offers truly pretty beaches such as Barbarossa but also the small lake of Terranera, with its characteristic yellow waters, created by the filling of an old iron mine.
Rio Marina was another mining area. Here there is the striking Topinetti beach with black gravel and sand formed by the presence of minerals such as iron. Again not to be missed is the nearby Cavo beach, the northernmost stretch on the island.

Fetovaia

On the northern side, rather, is the Marciana Marina, a charming fishing town. Don’t miss Phoenicia beach, characterized by its sea-smoothed gravel seabed. One of the most hidden and spectacular coves on the island is also located here: Crocetta, also known as Le Anime (The Souls). To reach it, you have to rappel down the steep cliff on the stairs, only to be rewarded by a turquoise sea and a beautiful alternation of dark and light rocks.

Marina di Campo is home to the most famous resorts, such as the fine pebble beach of Cavoli and the nearby Fetovaia—two jewels set in their respective bays, always crowded in summer. Of granite origin, the sand is golden in color. Be sure to also check out the large, sandy beach of Lacona.

Capoliveri is an area of iron mines in the Calamita and Ginevro mountains. The largest sandy beach is the Spiaggia dell’Innamorata, on the western side of the promontory, where there are also the small coves of Zuccale, Morcone and Pareti. At the tip of the headland, near an out-of-use pyrite quarry, is the Remaiolo beach, accessible only via a dirt road.
