Fortezza di Montalcino

The Fortress of Montalcino

It is an important example of military architecture because of its pentangular shape

The fortress was built in 1361 by Mino Foresi and Domenico di Feo. Built on top of other structures dating back to the 1200s, in the sixteenth century this fortress was the last defense of the Sienese Republic against the Medicean conquest. It was in this era that the external buttress was built. Visitors are allowed entry to the internal courtyard, where they can admire the structure’s watchtowers and glacis. The fortress also boasts breathtaking views of the surrounding countryside.
