Cinque Vele: the most beautiful sea in Tuscany

Crystal-clear, clean waters along with respect for the environment

Where is the most beautiful sea, in terms of crystal-clear waters and sustainable land management?
The answer is the most eagerly-awaited news of the summer.

Clean sea, beauty and focus on sustainability: 4 resorts in Tuscany have been awarded the “Cinque Vele” by Legambiente and Touring Club Italiano. The “Vele” (Sails) range from 1 (minimum score) to 5 (maximum score) and are awarded to the most deserving municipalities through data collected by Legambiente. A symbol that indicates not only the purity of the water but also the quality of the environment and services offered in general.

The destinations awarded the Cinque Vele (Five Sails) in 2026 are Castiglione della Pescaia, Capalbio, Giglio Island and Grosseto.

The following places received four sails: Scarlino, Magliano in Toscana, Orbetello, Follonica and Monte Argentario. Three Sails went to Marciana, Portoferraio, Campo dell'Elba, Capraia Island, Porto Azzurro, Marciana Marina and Capoliveri. These locations were awarded two sails: Rio, Castagneto Carducci, Camaiore, San Vincenzo, Tirrenia, Pisa, Bibbona and Cecina. Lastly, one sail was assigned to Pietrasanta, Forte dei Marmi and Viareggio.

Tuscany also stands out for its municipalities that have committed to adopting specific measures to make their beaches welcoming to sea turtles seeking a place to lay their eggs. The following are Tuscany’s "Sea Turtle Friendly” municipalities: Grosseto, Orbetello, Castiglione della Pescaia, Bibbona, Cecina and Camaiore.
