The Eco-Museum of the Pistoian mountains is comprised of an array of open-air itineraries, museums and didactic centers that are located throughout the Tuscan Apennines, just north of Pistoia. The Eco-Museum was established in 1990. Today, there are six open-air itineraries and each one has their own museum and didactic centre. The administrative center of the Eco-Museum is located in Gavinana’s historic Palazzo Achilli. This is where you can find the Information Centre and help desk, which is equipped with interactive labs, hotel information, and audio, visual and musical archives on the popular traditions in the area.
The Ironwork Centre and Educational Garden is an document centre about ironwork containing educational and audiovisual materials aimed at communicating a better understanding of the various phases of production of iron in Tuscany and the in the Montagna Pistoiese area in particular. The educational garden houses a water derivation system including a vertical wheel and windmill. It also boasts a green space dedicated to the various native species of the surrounding area.
