Bagno Vignoni

A village in the heart of the Val d’Orcia with an old-world charm

The charming village of Bagno Vignoni, just a few miles from San Quirico d’Orcia, has developed around the very special piazza filled with water, forming a large pool flowing with the famous hot waters and known since ancient times thanks in part to its extreme proximity to the famous pilgrim’s route of Via Francigena.

The waters of Bagno Vignoni gush out at a temperature of about 120 °F or 49 °C and have been appreciated for their healing properties since Roman times. As of 1170, they were then used in balneotherapy and fangobalneotherapy treatments.
In the Middle Ages, Bagno Vignoni enjoyed great fame, with illustrious figures such as Saint Catherine of Siena and Lorenzo de’ Medici even staying there.

Today, Bagno Vignoni remains one of the most evocative places in Tuscany. As the sun goes down and the water vapors begin to rise and wrap around the stone edges of the pool, the spectacle is truly fascinating, creating a timeless atmosphere.

Although it is no longer possible to soak in the warm waters of the ancient pool, bathing and spa treatments can still be enjoyed in the local accommodations.

Things to see

Bagno Vignoni offers three spa experiences that combine the charm of the past with contemporary wellness.
Overlooking the famous central pool, the Terme Spa & Resort brings elegance and tradition to the heart of the village. Not far away, the Terme Hotel La Posta welcomes guests with indoor and outdoor pools that open onto the celebrated views of the Val d’Orcia.
Rounding out the offerings is Terme Hotel Adler, with its atmospheric Saline Grotto, enriched with Dead Sea salts, in a unique and rejuvenating environment.

No visit to Bagno Vignoni is compete without exploring the evocative Parco dei Mulini (Park of Mills) that tells an ancient story of ingenuity and intuition.
First cited in 1207 in the Charta Libertatis of the community of Rocca a Tentennano, these mills testify to a skillful use of natural resources through exploiting the height difference between the spring and the Orcia River.
Fed by hot and constant water, the four underground mills were able to operate even in the summer months, thanks to a fine network of ducts, tanks and basins.

Local products

Between biancane (dome-shaped reliefs) and calanchi (badlands), undulating hills and rows of cypress trees, the Val d’Orcia is revealed village by village, also through the palate.
Red wine—be it Brunello di Montalcino or Nobile di Montepulciano—accompanies genuine and simple dishes in a perfect melody that harmonizes with the taste of tradition.
Stand outs at the table are the pecorino cheese with its delicate and aromatic taste as well as the Cinta Senese cured meats with their strong and authentic flavor thanks to the native breed of pig, rediscovered and much appreciated for its unique characteristics.
Also not to be missed is a plate of Pici, thick hand-rolled strands of pasta made with flour and water, as the stars of simple but characterful recipes.
