In Tuscany from December 15 to 31

Tips for getting to the end of the year in a blaze of light and art as the table is set

Can you detect the scent of ginger and cinnamon in the air? Can you resist this enthralling youthful excitement and sudden passion for tinkling lights?

We officially enter the two weeks of the year that transform Tuscany into a sparkling gift wrapped in traditions to embrace, events to share and places to visit. With a few too many calories and, with luck, a dusting of snow!

How could you refuse such a gift?

The stars of the show are undoubtedly the Christmas markets, whose handicrafts and delicacies transform the most beautiful town squares and historic centers of the small villages. At the heart of their programming are ice rinks, Ferris wheels, children’s shows, Christmas trees and live nativity scenes.

If you feel like alternating mulled wine with something much fierier, head to Garfagnana or Monte Amiata on December 24. In the village of Gorfigliano, in the municipality of Minucciano, ginormous bonfires of juniper branches are lit to the sound of bells. The same night sees the age-old tradition of the wood piles, where lit wood piles illuminate the village of Abbadia San Salvatore

If you happen upon a rainy day during your vacation in Tuscany, remember that the MAEC (Etruscan Academy Museum) in Cortona has opened the exhibition The Etruscans in the Netherlands

And if snowflakes are falling from the sky, Tuscany’s ski areas extend an open invitation.

Finally, for those extra calories we promised you: from appetizer to dessert, an all-Tuscan menu, complete with recipes.

Auguri!
