Traditions and folklore express the soul of an area, telling its history through customs, rituals and traditions. The municipality of Serravalle Pistoiese cherishes a living heritage and celebrates it throughout the year with festivals and popular events.
Numerous celebrations punctuate the life of local communities, such as the feast of the Sacro Cuore in Ponte di Serravalle (June 2), the feast of Santa Rocca in Castellina (August 16) and the festivities dedicated to the Blessed Virgin of Carmelo (July 16) and Santa Lucia (December 13) in Vinacciano.
In the medieval town of Serravalle Pistoiese, the patron saint celebrations dedicated to Saint Louis of Toulouse are highly anticipated each August 19. Throughout the festivities, the town comes alive with musical and folkloric events, including the Palio di San Lodovico, a traditional archery challenge between the districts of Serravalle, Masotti, Castellina and Ponte di Serravalle for the conquest of the “cencio” (a type of cloth). The celebrations culminate with a historical procession, which accompanies the statue of the saint through the streets of the village, followed by a fireworks display at the Rocca di Castruccio.
Mid-September sees the renewal of the historic Fiera di Casalguidi, having surpassed its 140ᵗʰ edition. Its origins date back to 1885, when it began as a Livestock Fair, the last market in the area before winter. Today, it offers a rich program of stands, stalls, cultural and sporting events, performances and the traditional Festa dell’Uva (Grape Festival), with parades of floats, music and folk dances.
Finally, among the most striking events is the Festa Bella, held triennially on Good Friday in Casalguidi, alternating with Quarrata and Montevettolini. This solemn costumed procession retraces the Passion of Christ, from the Last Supper to Golgotha, re-enacting his final moments.
