The Punta Falcone Park is located in the municipality of Piombino, nestled between the Gulf of Salivoli and Cala Moresca, offering paths of natural and historical interest.
The area differs markedly from the rest of the Val di Cornia, both in terms of the relief and in its particular geological formation. Emerging here is a volcanic rock of underwater origin, a characteristic feature of the Falcone area.
Punta Falcone is also the closest point between Piombino and Elba Island, just 4.5 miles, about 9 kilometers, from the island.
The park is rich in vegetation and home to colonies of seagulls and cormorants. It is bordered by the Piombino promontory, a strip of land that connects Populonia and the Gulf of Baratti with an evocative path that retraces the ancient Via dei Cavalleggeri that traverses Calamoresca, Spiaggia Lunga, Cala San Quirico and Buca delle Fate to reach Populonia and the Gulf of Baratti.
In April, Punta Falcone Park fills with flowers, becoming a paradise of scents and colors.
Due to its privileged position, with Argentario, the Tuscan archipelago and Corsica lined up in a formation to be viewed in a single glance. Over the centuries, Punta Falcone has been an important and strategic point for the defense of the coast. Between the 2 world wars, the Galeazzo Sommi Picenardi Main Battery, armed with 4 152/45 S1911 cannons, was built here by the Royal Navy, with the underground reserves still being visible and accessible today.
One of these has been turned into a popular museum focused on the territory.
In the former firing direction of the Sommi Picenardi battery is the astronomical observatory that organizes lectures and sky-watching events.
Also of special interest is the underwater visit to the area due to the presence of the Buca del Bove, a natural cave that can only be accessed from the sea and which owes its name to the ancient frequentation of the monk seal, in popular parlance called the “bove marino” (“sea ox”), which would birth pups there in the fall.
