An evocative stretch of river shaped by man over the centuries

The Golena del Tevere (Tiber Floodplain) Protected Natural Area of Local Interest is located in the upper Valtiberina, along the route of the Tiber River in the municipalities of Anghiari and Sansepolcro. The area can be reached from the road that connects Anghiari and Caprese Michelangelo, taking one of the many dirt tracks that crisscross the plain around Anghiari before reaching the Tiber.

The protected area comprises the river’s floodplain, downstream of the Montedoglio dam, and vaunts a variety of habitats characterized riparian plants and important wetlands formed from the abandoned quarries in the floodplain. The banks and the riverbed boast dense riparian vegetation and several poplar trees and undergrowth on the willow-lined rock face. The trees and shrubs also include Alders, English oaks and dogwoods.

The presence of numerous lakes that form due to extraction and the nearby reservoir create favourable conditions for birds. Fauna is typical in wetlands and river environments, and here you can find little bitterns, common kingfishers, great cormorants, little egrets and mallards.
