Bozzetti in Vetrina (Showcase of Sketches) is a secondary site of the Pierluigi Gherardi Museo dei Bozzetti, located inside Palazzo Panichi overlooking Piazza Duomo.
The space was intended to delve into the activities that are part of the process of creating and completing marble and bronze works, displaying a rotating selection of sketches in line with the themes of Pietrasanta’s exhibition programming.
Palazzo Panichi (or Carli) was built in the 15ᵗʰ century by Tommaso Panichi, later passing into the ownership of the Carli family. It has undergone profound architectural transformations over time. The restoration of this Palazzo well testifies to the construction technique perfected in Lucca in the 14ᵗʰ century, with the gradual replacement of brick with stone, the load-bearing element in the loggia.
The second floor of the Palazzo is home not only to “Bozzetti in Vetrina,” but is also partly dedicated to Piarist Father Eugenio Barsanti, inventor with Felice Matteucci of the internal combustion engine. Models of early prototypes of the internal combustion engines, memorabilia, documents and personal effects are on display.
