Pet-friendly experiences in the Maremma

Amid coastal pine groves, historic trails and museums

The Duna Feniglia Nature Reserve is one of the iconic sites of the coastal Maremma. This picturesque sandbar connects Monte Argentario to the mainland, being home to a vast pine grove crisscrossed by trails and pathways for biking and walking surrounded by nature.

Taking a walk along the Feniglia with your pooch means sharing and enjoying together a setting characterized by maritime pines, Mediterranean scrub and sweeping views of the sea. The area is particularly popular for its shaded spots and its proximity to the beach, making it ideal year-round.

The Tombolo della Giannella

On the opposite side of the Argentario lies the Tombolo della Giannella, a long strip of sand that separates the sea from the Orbetello Lagoon. Here, you can enjoy scenic walks covering beaches, dunes and natural areas, accompanied by your pet.

The presence of wide-open spaces and several access points to the sea renders this area particularly well-suited for those who want to spend a day outdoors, alternating between walks and moments of relaxation.

From the area of Castiglione della Pescaia to the Argentario coastline, the Maremma region offers plenty of opportunities to enjoy the beach with your dog. Along the coastline, public beaches alternate with designated areas for pets, where a set of rules must be followed.

In many areas, there are also services and facilities designed to make time spent here more comfortable for pets and their owners. Thanks to an extensive range of options, this region remains one of the most pet-friendly destinations in Tuscany for those who want to enjoy a vacation with their pets, combining relaxation, nature and outdoor activities.

Heading inland into the Maremma, the Vie Cave offer one of the most evocative experiences you can have with your dog. These ancient trails, carved into the tuff by the Etruscans, wind through forests and rocky cliffs, bound by breathtaking landscapes, creating routes steeped in history and nature.

The Vie Cave wind through the countryside around Pitigliano, Sovana and Sorano, offering visitors the chance to explore a lesser-known part of the Maremma—far from the coast but just as rich in scenic and cultural attractions.

In the Maremma, the “Musei di Maremma a 4 Zampe” (“Maremma 4-Legged Museums”) project promotes the inclusion of animals in cultural venues. The network includes some 30 sites, including castles, mining museums and archaeological museums that allow you to enrich your stay with cultural experiences to share with your dog. Dogs of various sizes are generally allowed, in accordance with the rules established by each facility.

In Castiglione della Pescaia, for example, you can visit the Casa Rossa Ximenes Multimedia Museum and the Giardino Viaggio di Ritorno. In Follonica, there is the Civic Art Gallery and Museum of Cast Iron Arts of the Maremma. In Grosseto, the following institutions have joined the museum network: the Maremma Archaeological and Art Museum, the Maremma Natural History Museum, Le Clarisse Cultural Center and the Roselle Archaeological Area. The complete list of Musei a 4 Zampe is available on the Maremma Museums website.
