An exhibition marking a centenary since the 1st performance of Puccini’s opera

From April to November, an exhibition throughout several rooms of the Puccini Museum in Lucca, recounting the complex process of bringing Puccini’s grand opera to the stage through images from the time, photographs of the stage, news reports and original documents, offering visitors the thrill of experiencing first-hand the opening night a full century ago.

At the heart of the exhibition are 2 extraordinary historical costumes from Turandot, complete with jewelry and accessories, which were actually used in the 1926 premiere and rediscovered a few years ago by the Prato Textile Museum. Since, they have undergone painstaking restoration for conservation in the Museum’s own workshops.

Visitors will also be able to admire 2 original sketches by Galileo Chini and the costume designs of Umberto Brunelleschi, which were not used for the Milan premiere but served as the model for all subsequent ‘premieres’ in Italy and the rest of the world, such as that of New York on November 16, 1926. The exhibition concludes with the costume for the 2nd act, bequeathed to the Museum by Maria Jeritza, star of that unforgettable production at the Metropolitan Opera House.

The exhibition can be visited during the Puccini Museum’s opening hours.

Every Saturday and on the 3rd Sunday of the month, entry tickets include a guided visit offered by the Museum staff.
