From August 29 to September 6, the medieval village of Paganico, a hamlet of the widespread municipality of Civitella Paganico, host the Sagra della Granocchia (Frog Food Festival), one of the longest-running and most distinctive events in Maremma.
The highlight of the festival is the Palio della Granocchia which sees
champions from each ‘rione’ (district) of the village of Paganico (Rione Centro, Rione Porta Gorella, Rione Porta Grossetana and Rione Porta Senese) compete along a course within the historic center pushing a kind of wheelbarrow holding 3 frogs.
The winner of the race is whoever crosses the finish line 1ˢᵗ without losing any of their amphibian passengers along the way.
The Palio is held on the 1ˢᵗ Sunday of September as the closing event of the festival.
The 3 districts also face off at the stove with the gastronomic battle Rioni in Cucina, with menus containing frog-based dishes.
Not to be missed is the historical procession, with dozens of paraders in period costumes, while Paganico’s evening is enlivened by the Barranocchia band, with live musical performances.
For the occasion, the streets of the historic center of Paganico are lined with handicraft markets and an ancient crafts exhibition.
