The Ceramics Museum of Montelupo Fiorentino

Exploring local creative traditions

Montelupo Fiorentino
Guests to the Ceramics Museum of Montelupo Fiorentino can see evocative ceramics taken from archeological sites and urban digs, in addition to a minor collection made up of acquisitions and donations. The museum was inaugurated on July 3, 1983 in the ex-Palazzo Podestale of Montelupo. On May 24, 2008 it was transferred to a new location in Piazza Vittorio Veneto. The collection pertaining to the Ceramics Museum of Montelupo Fiorentino is primarily made up of ceramics produced in this area, especially those created between the XV and XVI centuries. It was once one of the main production centers within the Mediterranean basin. With regards to majolica, it was the base for Florentine production for many years.

The collection, designed to showcase various aspects of this unique creative reality, is the result of archeological digs that were carried out in the town’s historical center from 1973 onwards. Digging allowed experts to discover numerous remains of furnaces and uncover authentic storehouses of ceramic materials that were often discarded due to breakage, even if they proved otherwise identical to those available on the market. Its collections include many plates and jugs, in addition to pharmacy ceramics and devotional plaques. They were produced over a period spanning five centuries, from the second half of the XIII century, the period famous for its ‘Archaic Majolica’, and the XVII century, a period which saw the decline of many ancient factories.
