A very oldchurch transformed over the centuries

What is today the Church of St. Niccolò in Roccastrada - also called the Church of St. Nicola - is the result of various restorations that the original structure went through over the centuries.
Probably founded in the 11th century, the notable and imposing medieval structures seem to indicate that fundamental reconstruction work already took place during the 13th century.
In modern times, during the 17th century, two symmetrical vaulted rooms were added to the sides of the church, making the plan a classical Latin cross.
Although the modern and medieval architectural foundations are still visible, during the 19th century a further enlargement of the presbytery area was carried out consequent to the demolition of the medieval apse. The brick and travertine covering of the facade, on the other hand, dates back to the mid-20th century.
Inside the church are two frescoes dating back to the mid-16th century attributed to Giovanni Maria di Ser Giovanni Tolosani: they depict an Annunciation and a Virgin and Child. As far as the sculptural environment is concerned, of particular importance is the baptismal font realized in the 16th century.
