Excursion to the incredible Jerusalem of San Vivaldo

An itinerary of rare suggestion where the sacred tradition, the incredible Jerusalem of San Vivaldo with its chapels, meets the popular tradition of Iano and its cribs, until we reach the panoramic Sanctuary of the Pietrina that stands on a spur of Verrucano, all around the silences and endless views of the Pisan hills, former mines, sulfur springs and limestone outcrops. 

We will set off for Iano, which at this time of year is dressed in cribs that color every corner of the village. We will continue toward amazing outcrops with characteristic purplish-red coloring indicative of an abundance of minerals, nearby we also find a former cinnabar mine.

We will pass through the characteristic rural agglomeration of Palagio and then climb to the top of the Sanctuary of Pietrina, an extraordinary place with its small crib in the cave and a panoramic terrace with a view that alone is worth the hike.

We will go into wooded cart tracks used by lumberjacks until we reach the locality of Marrado, from which we will continue to the Jerusalem of San Vivaldo, a magical place with its complex of chapels with polychrome terracottas built in the 15th century to reproduce the plan of Jerusalem, so much so that Pope Leo X granted an indulgence to visitors to this place that will not fail to leave us with indelible memories.
