Montopoli in Val d'Arno

The Tower of San Matteo, in front of the Town Hall, has become an emblem of the city of Montopoli. It is part of the remains of a castle and was erected in 1431 by Neri Capponi, whom the Florentine Republic had charged with fortifying the western portion of the castle. The fortress was destroyed in 1944.
