A unique landscape sculpted by time

The Crete Senesi in Asciano represent one of the most iconic landscapes of Tuscany, an area where soil morphology, historic villages and agricultural activity tell of an ancient geological and human history. Here, the soft clay hills, shaped over millions of years, create a unique scenery, characterized by mutating colors and sinuous forms that change with the light and the seasons.

Among the most outstanding naturalistic facets to emerge is the geosite of the Chiusure and Monte Oliveto Maggiore badlands, an area of extraordinary scientific and scenic interest.

The badlands are geomorphological formations generated by the erosion of Pliocene clays, deposited between about 2.6 and 5.3 million years ago, when this area was occupied by an ancient sea. The progressive uplift of the land, combined with the combined action of stormwater, wind and climatic changes, has given rise to these deep furrows, characterized by sharp ridges and steep slopes.

From a scientific point of view, the badlands represent a natural laboratory for the study of erosional processes, clay-soil dynamics and landscape evolution.

The sparse vegetation cover, due to the unstable and low-permeable nature of the soils, further accelerates surface erosion phenomena, meaning these formations are in a constant state of change.

In addition to their geological value, the badlands offer a truly impressive visual experience, with sharp contours, color contrasts and open vistas stretching to the horizon. To walk among such scenery is to be immersed in an environment where time seems to slow down and nature displays her creative power.

This area, now recognized and protected for its environmental importance, invites exploration with respect and care, step by step, offering visitors and scholars a unique opportunity to understand the deep connection between geology, landscape and the cultural identity of the area.
