A place dedicated to 20ᵗʰ-century art in Pistoia

Palazzo de’ Rossi is the hub of the Fondazione Pistoia Musei, dedicated to the art of Pistoia from the 20ᵗʰ century. The collection is a landmark for accessing various generations of art that came in succession throughout the 20ᵗʰ century.

Recently restored, the Palazzo is a prestigious example of Tuscan architecture housing important works by artists active in Pistoia from the early-20ᵗʰ century to the present day, including Galileo Chini, Andrea Lippi, Eloisa Pacini, Pietro Bugiani, Egle Marini and Marino Marini, Fernando Melani, Gualtiero Nativi, Mario Nigro, Umberto Buscioni and Roberto Barni.

The present look of the historic Palazzo is the result of a series of construction works that were mostly carried out in the second half of the 18ᵗʰ century and testify to the nobility of Pistoia’s de’ Rossi family. The interior features 19ᵗʰ-century adornments by local painters Giuseppe Bezzuoli, Nicola Monti, Ferdinando Marini and Bartolomeo Valiani. In 2004, a ceiling in the building was decorated by U.S. artist Sol Lewitt.

The rooms likewise house the In Visita project, a temporary exhibition of 20ᵗʰ- and 21ˢᵗ-century works in dialogue with the permanent collection.
