Museum of the Nobile Contrada del Nicchio

An exhibition of winning Palio banners, costumes, sacred furnishings and works of art

The Museum of the Nobile Contrada del Nicchio (Noble Contrada of the Seashell) in Siena is located behind the 17th century Oratory of St Gaetano di Thiene, the district’s oratory in via dei Pispini.

The museum displays the uniforms and the Palii won by the Nicchio. The complex also includes a visit to the 1683 oratory with frescoes by Giuseppe Nicola Nasini (1657-1736) and Apollonio Nasini (1692-1768) portraying the life of St Gaetano Thiene, with sculptures by Giacomo Franchini (1686-1705).

Among the main works of art, the silverware from the Sienese and Tuscan school (15th-19th century) are of particular interest, as are the sacred vestments dating to the 17th-18th century, ceramic objects (15th century), a Madonna and Child by Benedetto da Maiano (15th century), a terracotta polychrome depicting St Sebastian by Giovanni di Stefano (1443-1504) and a painting by Francesco Rustichi (1592-1626).
