Tuscany is one of the world’s best mountain biking venues in which you can plan tons of bike tours – or driving tours as well: whenever you’ll go, you’ll face stunning panoramas and you’ll have the unique possibility to visit ancient monuments and historical sites, or drink good wines while eating some local, typical meals. There are no set routes, but we would suggest you to visit the Val D’Orcia by bike during spring. How to get there The Valdorcia is the valley settled between the Southern Siena hills and the Monte Amiata, an ancient volcano. Castiglione d'Orcia, Montalcino, Pienza, Radicofani and San Quirico d'Orcia are its main towns, but Contignano, Monticchiello, Bagno Vignoni, Bagni San Filippo (where you’ll find some natural thermal baths), Rocca d'Orcia, Campiglia d'Orcia and Vivo d'Orcia are nice villages as well, that must be visited once in a lifetime. After your low cost flight that drove you to Pisa airport or your arrival in Florence Airport, catch a train to Siena or rent a car.

From Siena go South in the direction of Buonconvento, on the way to Valdorcia: one after the other you’ll discover the gentle, cultivated hills with their villages and castles such as Montalcino (the Brunello di Montalcino wine hometown) or Pienza (15th century “ideal town” famous for her pecorino cheese). This landscape is a symbol of Tuscany and it’s famous all over the world, celebrated by painters and by the UNESCO, that put Val d’Orcia in the list of World Heritage Sites, for its perfection and harmony. Plan your tour carefully As you can see in the map below, the Val d’Orcia area is quite big to be covered by bike if your are not professional athletes, so what we suggest is to choose one agriturismo as your base and then rent a bike (almost every accommodation can borrow you bicycles – ask before, during your booking phase) to explore the surroundings, planning carefully the kilometres you are going to ride. Otherwise you can choose a different transportation -car, motorbike (or vespa) or horse- according to the typology of vacation you need: for instance, if you travel with kids a car could be more useful, otherwise if you are a couple a horseback riding in Valdorcia would be very romantic! Stop cycling and relax! :) Remember to also spend a day in one of the thermal baths that lie in the valley, choose between: Terme S. Filippo, Bagno Vignoni, Centro Termale Fonteverde. In Tuscany you can explore new ways of tourism and you have the possibility to enjoy the vacation you have always dreamt. What would your ideal tour of the Val d’Orcia be like?
