Palio delle Botti

Folklore

In Suvereto, the Palio of Santa Croce

On May 16 in Suvereto comes the Palio delle Botti, with a folkloric race between teams of pushers who compete along the cobbled streets of the historic center, pushing 5-quintal botti (barrels).

The competing pairs carry the barrel on their stomachs, pushing it along the circuit, trying to keep it stable, advancing at a steady stride and outpacing their opponents
A test of strength, technique and endurance that is part of the district’s most heartfelt traditions.

The Running of the Barrels takes place twice a year: in May with the Palio di Santa Croce and in August with the Palio dell’Imperatore
In the fall, the winning teams of the Italian races meet in the Palio Nazionale delle Botti (National Barrel Race).

For this edition, the Palio team of pushers is ready to return to the competition, along with women’s and men’s teams from different national backgrounds, in an afternoon of competition, spectacle and participation.
