Torchlight Procession of San Giuseppe

Folklore

In Pitigliano an ancient manifestation linked to the ritual of fire

The Torchlight Procession of San Giuseppe (St. Joseph) in Pitigliano is the ultimate expression of local folklore, an ancient event linked to the ritual of fire.

Long ago these rites had a propitiatory meaning of abundance and renewal. Then, in Christian times, the rite also took on a religious significance.

On the night of March 19, from outside the village, hooded men carry a bundle of flaming reeds on their shoulders, creating a striking light procession. Once reached Piazza Garibaldi, they witness the burning of the Invernacciu, a puppet made of reeds and branches that represents winter, then the dancing around the fire to the cry of "hurray for St. Joseph". The rite is meant to propitiate the arrival of spring.

When the flames go out, it is time to collect the ashes to take home as a symbol of good luck.
And it is also the time to enjoy rice fritters and drink good Pitigliano wine!
