Mardi Gras in Viareggio: four days at the heart of carnival

Discover Viareggio Carnival with a four-day, three-night stay, from Monday to Thursday, centred on the Mardi Gras parade, local traditions and the creativity of its master float builders. This experience combines the spectacle of the floats with hands-on discovery, English-language cultural activities, local dining and free time on the Tuscan coast.

On Monday, your arrival transfer from Pisa, Florence or Lucca takes you to Viareggio. Settle into a selected four-star or five-star hotel, preferably along the parade circuit, subject to availability. The rest of the day is yours to enjoy a walk along the seafront or relax.

Mardi Gras begins in the outdoor areas of the Carnival Citadel, where you watch the floats emerge from their hangars and begin their journey towards the parade circuit. An explanation in English introduces the themes and creative details of the works you will see in the parade. This experience takes place exclusively outdoors: access to the hangars is not permitted for safety reasons.

After your included lunch, head to Piazza Mazzini to watch the parade from your assigned grandstand seats. You can also leave the stands and join the crowds along the route, experiencing the Carnival atmosphere from a different perspective. The day ends with dinner in Rione Darsena, a neighbourhood closely connected with Viareggio’s maritime traditions and community life.

On Wednesday, explore the artistry behind the spectacle you enjoyed the previous day. A visit to the Carnival Museum introduces the history of the celebration and its creative evolution. A hands-on papier-mâché workshop then invites you to try some of the techniques used to shape Carnival creations. Both activities are conducted in English.

Following your included lunch, the afternoon and evening are at leisure. Explore Viareggio, stroll along the promenade or relax at your hotel.

On Thursday, after breakfast and check-out, your departure transfer to Pisa, Florence or Lucca brings the stay to a close.
