The 12th-century parish church was built atop an older early medieval church

The Parish Church of Santa Maria Assunta in Villa Basilica was mentioned as early as 807, but the building as it appears today dates to the 12th century.

It was during this time that the façade and apse were decorated with the same motifs seen on the porticoes and the bell tower was built according to a technique used for the church itself, utilizing ashlar blocks of sandstone, a common material found throughout the area.

The church vaunts a single apse and three naves divided by a double series of seven columns, each of which is topped with capitals sculpted in the shape of animals and flowers. There are several artworks in the church, including the 13th-century crucifix by Berlinghiero Berlinghieri.
