A small sanctuary of popular devotion

Located in the hamlet of Rota, not far from the village of Castagno d'Andrea, in the Municipality of San Godenzo, the oratory is an important example of popular religious devotion that has characterized the communities settled on the slopes of Monte Falterona for centuries. This small sacred building is nestled in a natural setting of great scenic and environmental value, inside the Foreste Casentinesi, Monte Falterona and Campigna National Park, and still retains the charm of the rural places of worship that once shaped the daily lives of mountain communities.

The building was constructed in 1748 and features an entrance preceded by a churchyard that is six steps higher than the road. The churchyard is paved with stone and covered by a hipped-roof canopy supported by small square stone columns resting on a low wall that also serves as a seat. Above the stone-framed doorway, there is a coat of arms featuring the letter “M”, symbolizing Mary, and the date MDCCLXXXXV (1795), indicating the year the canopy was built. At the rear, a lower apsidal structure projects outwards. It probably once housed the choir, but is now closed off and has been turned into a sacristy.

The interior is simple and unadorned, but visitors can admire a “study” by Antonio Ciccone, a student of Annigoni; behind the high altar, there is a niche containing an image of the Virgin Mary.

The oratory is historically linked to the Parish of San Martino, upon which it depended for religious services and spiritual guidance for the local inhabitants.

For those exploring the area’s trails or visiting the historic hamlets around Castagno d'Andrea, the oratory is a stopping place where history, spirituality and contact with nature come together.
