The castle of Caprese Michelangelo, birthplace of the great artist

An ancient castle perched in the green Tuscan hills, a museum dedicated to sculpture from the Renaissance to the present day, the birthplace of one of the greatest artists of all time. All this is the House Museum of Michelangelo Buonarroti in Caprese Michelangelo.

The museum is located in the ancient castle of Caprese, which was built around the year 1000; it comprises three buildings, the Palazzo del Podestà, the Palazzo Clusini and the "high court," enclosed within the walls that also include the castle's place-of-arms, now a garden with exhibitions.

On 6 March 1475, when Ludovico di Leonardo Buonarroti was podestà of this community, Michelangelo was born in this very fortress. A tour of his most important sculptural works, visible here thanks to a collection of plaster casts of great historical and educational value, celebrates his greatness as a sculptor.

The museum also houses numerous sculptures by contemporary artists, donated on the occasion of exhibitions by the artists themselves or part of the "Guidoni Collection." With new languages and new materials these artists, among whom we recall Gemito, Canova, Greco, Fazzini, Boccioni, renewed the art of sculpture.
