A journey into a magical miniature microcosm

Miniature landscapes, hundreds of trains whizzing by and thousands of characters telling many stories—these are the ingredients of HZERO, the miniature train museum located right in the center of Florence, just a stone’s throw from the Santa Maria Novella train station and home to one of Europe’s largest model railways!

Born from the imagination of Giuseppe Paternò Castello di San Giuliano and built over more than four decades, this 3013-square-feet (280-square-meter) imaginary miniature world amazes visitors with many perfectly reconstructed sceneries in a scale of 1:87, recreating the architecture of Berlin, the mountainous landscapes of the Dolomites and the coasts of Elba Island, seeing over 70 toy trains whiz by in unison, thanks to a control system similar to that of regular high-speed trains. But the real fun at HZERO is all in the “treasure hunt” to find the many fun scenes depicted in the model: a wedding taking place just a few steps away from a funeral, a bicycle race that captures as much attention as a group of nudists just ahead, a boulangerie on fire with dozens of firefighters racing in, a checkpoint for an unsuspecting reckless motorcyclist ... Look keenly and find all the hidden scenes, rediscovering that sense of playfulness and wonder that unites everyone, children and adults alike.

The HZERO experience is more than just the impressive model railroad! On the second floor of the museum, you can admire a collection of historical models, discover the history of the miniature railroad through a documentary in the cinema room and even try your hand in a type of video game thanks to two stations with 3D viewers to explore the model railroad in virtual reality. Don’t forget to snap a souvenir photo with the model scenery in the green screen selfie corner!

Throughout the year, the HZERO Miniature Train Museum also organizes workshops for schools and families, as well as offering a series of model railroad courses for adults and children.
