GeoMet - Museum of Geodiversity and Mines in the Metalliferous Hills

GeoMet is an innovative museum that aims to show visitors - through videos, informational panels, artifacts and minerals - the geological aspects characterizing this part of Maremma: from mineral deposits to the exploitation of geological resources, right up to the closure of the mines at the end of the last century.

The visit offers two itineraries; you can enjoy both, or you can choose just one of the two:

The first itinerary is the one at the GeoMet Museum in Gavorrano (Museum of Geodiversity and Mines in the Metalliferous Hills) located inside the "Bagnetti” building and focusing on the geophysics and geology of the area, with explanatory videos. Minerals typical of the area of the metalliferous hills are on display in the rock room. The exhibition also includes two large-scale models showing what the mining sites looked like and how they were organized. Lastly, in the final room, the focus shifts to personal stories told by the miners, who describe their lives when the mine was still in operation. 

The second itinerary, which is only accessible with a guide, takes place in the Gavorrano Mine Tunnel, once used as an explosives storage facility and known as Santa Barbara. Today, the tunnel has been reconstructed in order to restore the original appearance of the mining areas, with tools and other equipment used during mining operations. The itinerary runs through a single tunnel approximately 300 meters long. If you're visiting in the summer, we recommend bringing something to wear over your shoulders, as the temperature inside is around 15° C. It is also best to avoid sandals with very thin soles, because the floor is damp.

In September and October, the museum is open on Saturdays and Sundays, but it is closed from November through March. During the closing period, personalized visits for groups and schools can be arranged upon request.
