Church of Santa Maria Novella

One of Florence’s greatest basilicas

Florence
The church of Santa Maria Novella was built by Domenican monks between the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries. It has undergone many alterations in the centuries since then, such as the those done by Vasari which began in 1566 and the nineteenth century renovation work to revive the building’s Gothic style.

Mass is held in the church on weekdays at 7.30am and 6pm, and on Sundays/holidays at 8.30am, 10.30am, 12pm and 6pm. At these times, a chapel is open free of charge for prayer and worship.

The church is also open to visitors for a small fee at specific times of the day, in order to maintain the quiet of the church, to protect its monuments and paintings and to ensure that religious services are not interrupted.
