The town of Alberese is located 9 miles/15 kilometers southeast of Grosseto, in the heart of the Maremma Park. The presence of man has been recorded since the Paleolithic period in the numerous caves that open onto the limestone reliefs such as the Grotta della Fabbrica, Grotta delle Caprarecce and Grotta Scoglietto. In Roman times, the territory of the park was home to a temple dedicated to Diana, while the greatest evidence of the frequentation of the Alberese area in medieval times is surely the San Rabano Abbey. Currently, the Maremma Regional Park Authority and a series of regional regulations make it possible to safeguard the preservation and continuation of this natural, historical and cultural heritage.
Wild herds of Maremma horses and cattle still roam the untouched meadows guarded by the Butteri, as the Maremma herders are called, while among the dense woods of the Monti dell’Uccellina lives a vast biodiversity undisturbed. The endless countryside comes alive in every season with the colors of nature—ochres in autumn and winter, greens in spring and yellows in summer, when expanses of sunflowers alternate with fields of wheat.
The modern settlement is reduced to a few houses that wind between the 15ᵗʰ-century Villa Granducale and the Church of Santa Maria, built in 1956 in Neo-Romanesque style. Worth highlighting are the activities that can be done in this locality thanks to the presence of the Maremma Park. Indeed, it is possible to participate in numerous historical, cultural and naturalistic initiatives throughout the year and in many entertaining events held during the summer period at the Magazzini or at the Granaio Lorenese.
