A loop ride from the valley floor to the Sanctuary of La Verna
Set out from the village of Corsalone to venture into the heart of the Casentinesi Forests, one of the wildest corners of Tuscany. After walking a few feet, leave the paved roads behind and wander onto quiet dirt roads. Right from the start, tackle a steep initial climb that winds through the woods toward the Chiappe di Marco ridge. The physical effort is well worth it when the forest suddenly opens up, offering panoramic views of deep valleys and a sea of green stretching as far as the eye can see.
Continuing along the trail, reach the quaint hamlet of La Beccia. From here, the hiking trail branches off, leading to the Sanctuary of La Verna, a true must-see stop on your tour. Do note that this climb is short but steep, leading directly to the Sanctuary after about 600 meters or 2000 feet. If you prefer, avoid this by taking the road climb that is longer but much gentler. This route begins at Chiusi della Verna and adds some 5.5 kilometers or 3.4 miles to the itinerary.
Now that you’ve made it past the most challenging stretches of the day, begin the long descent toward Gello and Maiolica, tiny hamlets where the traditional stone houses and the silence tell the story of a rural way of life that has remained unchanged over the centuries. There is something rare and precious to savor as you cycle through these enchanted places. The descent follows scenic ridges that offer sweeping, spectacular views of the valleys below.
Finally, head back passing through the village of Campi then gently climbing along the banks of the Corsalone Stream. At the end of your bike ride, we recommend taking a refreshing break at the beautiful natural pools and waterfalls along the stream—the perfect reward towards the end of the itinerary.
