Christmas in Tuscany: special openings at museums!

Spending the Christmas and New Year holidays in in Tuscany is a beautiful experience, full of Christmas markets and events, the smell of roasted chestnuts, big Christmas trees in the main squares, lights decorating the streets and a general special feeling. But sometimes the closed door of a museum can ruin a perfect day! So, here is a brief guide to museum opening times during these next holidays, in Florence, Siena and Pisa. FLORENCE florence winter The Uffizi Gallery and Accademia Gallery at the others State Museums – Pitti Palace, Bargello National Museum, Medici Chapels, Palazzo Davanzati Museum, Orsanmichele – will be close on December 25, but they will all be open on December 24 and 26. The two main galleries will also be exceptionally open on January 6 (8.15am-6.50pm). During the holidays, until January 2, the Reali Poste at Uffizi will be open (10am-7pm, free entrance) for the special exhibition “Never Seen Before – The Russian icons at the Uffizi”. The Bargello museum is the one with the most unexpected gift this year: from December 26 to January 6 (with the exception of January 1 and 5) closing time is scheduled at 5pm, instead 2pm. Even more, on December 26, doors will remain open until 9pm!

On December 25 you can enjoy the beautiful exhibition PICASSO AND SPANISH MODERNITY at Palazzo Strozzi. Open until January 25, 2015.

As for the Palazzo Vecchio Museum, these are this year's special opening hours:  from 9am till midnight on December 24, 26, 27, 28, 29 and 30. It will be closed on December 25. The other days the museum is open from 9am to 7pm (Thursdays 9am-2pm). During the holidays, the Santa Maria Novella complex has a gift for us, a few special open days of the Great Cloiser: December 24 (9am-5.30pm), 25 (1-7pm), 26 (9am-5.30pm), 27 (9am-5pm), 28 (1-5pm) and 31 (9am-5pm). The Museo del Novecento, the newest museum in town, will be regularly open (and with a special light installation projected on its facade) Or, you can start the New Year with an out-of-town day trip, on January 5, to Villa Petraia (8.15am-4.30pm), Villa Poggio a Caiano (8.15am-4.30pm), Villa Cerreto Guidi (8.15am-4.30pm), the Villa Castello’s garden (8.15am-4.30pm).

If you’re in Siena, remember that the extraordinary opening of the Porta del Cielo (Gate of Heaven), after two centuries of restoration, is been extended until January, 6. Don’t miss this incredible opportunity to reach the sky!

The Santa Maria della Scala museum will be close only on December 25, while it will remain open from December 24 to January 6 (10.30am-6.30pm).  PISA These are the opening times to visit the main monuments in town from December 23 to January 6: Leaning Tower 9am-7pm Cathedral 10am-6pm Battistero, Camposanto Monumentale, Opera del Duomo Museum, Museum of Sinopie, 9am-6pm The Miracles Square (Piazza dei Miracoli) is currently also the background of the special exhibition "Angels", by the Polish artist Igor Mitoraj, who passed away just a few months ago (December 24, 10am-5pm; December 25-January 6, 9am-6pm).

And let's not forget one of the best museum to visit during the holidays: Palazzo Blu! The doors will be open every day (10am-7pm or 8pm) to allow visitors to enjoy the beautiful exhibition dedicated to one of the most important, cursed and original artists of the so-called École de Paris: Amedeo Modigliani et ses amis
