The Sansepolcro Crossbow Society is an ancient association with origins in Renaissance Tuscany, despite the passing of time, without interruption since the 15th century, it has continued to hold the “Palio della Balestra” (Crossbow competition), an exceptional event, in which archers from Sansepolcro compete against their all time rivals, the archers from Gubbio.he crossbow games between Sansepolcro and Gubbio has been documented since 1594, however there are other reliable historic sources which confirm that the competition was held even earlier. A document dating 1619, tells us that the Sansepolcro archers invited those from Gubbio to the St. Egidio competition. "With this we warmly invite you to St. Egidio, on the first day of September, to our jolly festivity, to shoot our crossbows as is our tradition; your archers can shoot in the style they please. We pray immediately that major glory will be given to the winner who measures against expert and famous men".
Piero della Francesca himself, great painter and famous citizen of Sansepolcro, seems to have owned one of the 160 council crossbows.
