Travel back in time in Garfagnana

Explore the fortifications and fortresses of the Garfagnana is like travelling back in time to the Middle Ages, when this land was a border area, the center of interest and clash of several Tuscan noble families. 

Even today most of the remaining villages are perched and often have kept intact their wonderful walls, castles and fortresses of great artistic and cultural importance.

The first stop of our tour will be the fortress of Castiglione di Garfagnana, a medieval center which has preserved completely intact its walls. Then we will visit the fortified village of Perpoli, the village of Cascio, the Hermitage of Calomini, the fortress of the Estensi di Camporgiano, the fortress of Verrucole, the Ariostesca fortress of Castelnuovo di Garfagnana (which in the sixteenth century hosted for three years the poet Ludovico Ariosto, Governor of the province of Garfagnana at the time of the Este dominion) and the castle of Ghivizzano.

In particular in Castelvecchio Pascoli we will discover, on the Caprona hills, the house where the poet Giovanni Pascoli lived and was buried.

And, to make sure we won't miss anything, we will visit a dairy where its producer will show us the milk process and taste the different cheeses of his production, accompanied by bread and honey. At last, we will visit an artisan pork processing laboratory and taste the local pork products and salami.

We won't miss the typical "Garfagnina" dinner with a tasting of the best dishes of the cuisine of the area.
