Holiday in the Gulf of Follonica: a journey through history
A 3-day journey back in the time, from the nineteenth-century central district of Follonica, through the Medieval period, up to the Etruscan period.
You'll be welcomed just like at home, in one of the Bed and Breakfast (of your own choice) that are part of the FABB Association.
This holiday package will bring you from the nineteenth-century industrial centre of Follonica, the central city district, to the medieval villages of the Metalliferous Hills of Massa Marittima, Gavorrano and Scarlino, up to the ancient era of our ancestors: the Etruscans in Vetulonia.

Day 1
Arrival in Follonica in the afternoon. Welcome and check-in at the chosen accommodation facilities. Seeing with the guide and presentation of the tour program, starting out of the tour with the guided visit of Follonica. This charming town, overlooking the homonymous Gulf, became an important centre during the Grand Duchy of Tuscany, when Leopold II transformed Follonica into an iron ore industrial centre. The industrial facilities are still visible and some of them have been carefully restored to be used as a Theatre and Museum. Dinner in a local typical restaurant to taste the delicious seafood of the Gulf. Overnight stay.
Day 2
Breakfast, meeting with the guide, departure to Massa Marittima, the ancient chief town of Maremma, also stated the “Gemstone of Medieval Age”. You will walk through the small streets of the old town and climb to the “Candeliere” Tower, to feel the mysterious and fascinating atmosphere of ancient times. Lunch with tasting of typical products. In the afternoon, the tour will bring you to the village of Gavorrano for a visit to its mine; and to the village of Scarlino to enjoy an amazing sunset on the Gulf of Follonica from the top of the Rocca castle. Back to the hotel, dinner in a local restaurant, overnight stay.
Day 3
Breakfast. Departure for an excursion in the Upper Maremma area, cradle of the ancient Etruscan culture. You'll pass through the village of Castiglione della Pescaia to reach Vetulonia and visit its Etruscan Museum and Necropolis. Lunch with tasting of local food in a winery owning a prestigious cellar. In the afternoon, visit the Cellar and its small Etruscan museum, showing finds discovered in the ground of the vineyard. Returnback to Follonica, dinner in a local restaurant, overnight stay.
Day 4
Breakfast, free time for a relaxing walk on the seaside and shopping in Follonica, farewell and departure.
