Iron, water, and wine: 40 km by e-Bike through the Colline Metallifere
A guided e-Bike excursion through mining landscapes and historic villages, and authentic Tuscan flavors
A two-wheeled experience in the most authentic heart of the Maremma, where time changes pace and nature guides every pedal stroke.
Our journey begins in the small hamlet of Valpiana, a charming ironworks village founded in 1377 when the father of Saint Bernardino of Siena obtained permission to build the first smelting furnaces in the area.
Today, where the sound of hammers once reigned supreme, the silence of the Tuscan countryside reigns supreme.
Our first stop is Lake Accesa, a pristine body of water surrounded by dense forests of holm oak and manna ash. Characterized by crystal-clear waters and nestled between heart-shaped hills, the lake invites a regenerating break: those who wish can stop for a swim.
From here, we'll pedal along secondary roads and trails immersed in dense forests of oak and cork oak, allowing the landscape to change with every turn amidst the scents of the Mediterranean scrub.
The journey continues with gentle climbs until reaching Massa Marittima, one of the best-preserved medieval villages in the region and the main gateway to the UNESCO Geopark of the Metalliferous Hills. Here, we'll enjoy a refreshing break among the narrow streets of the historic center, where a local wine shop will host us for a light lunch featuring local delicacies. In the afternoon, the day will continue with a visit to the village and the fascinating Santa Cecilia Organ Museum, a one-of-a-kind gem.
The route, approximately 40 km long, is almost entirely on asphalt with short, easily navigable dirt sections, making the excursion suitable for adults and children 14 and older.
Thanks to the use of e-bikes, we'll tackle the journey without excessive effort, fully enjoying the beauty of an itinerary that expertly combines industrial history and pristine nature.
