Hiking tour in Vetulonia discovering the Etruscans
A walk through the woods and the ancient archeological sites of the Etruscan Coast
In the heart of the hills of Castiglione della Pescaia, a few kilometres from the sea, lies the quiet village of Vetulonia. But, in the woods surrounding it, the ancient traces of the powerful Etruscan metropolis can surprise and amaze the walker.
Paved streets, Necropolis and the surprising Archaeological Area of Vetulonia with its important Civic Archaeological Museum "Isidoro Falchi", await you to discover and learn about the Etruscan civilisation.
The route unfolds across hilly paths, wooded sections and open views over the Maremma, with a moderate elevation gain, suitable for walkers accustomed to moving on natural terrain.
Along the way, the walk reaches the village of Vetulonia, an ancient Etruscan city mentioned in classical sources, with a visit to the archaeological area where the remains of cyclopean walls and monumental necropolises can be seen.
The stop allows participants to explore the history of the site, the role of Vetulonia in the Etruscan world, and the relationship between landscape, settlements and ancient communication routes.
The hike then continues through Mediterranean scrub, olive groves and oak woods, alternating shaded stretches with panoramic viewpoints over the Maremma plain and the coastline. The return follows a different route, completing the loop and offering new views of the surrounding landscape.
