A journey through the labyrinth of Pistoia’s history

Pistoia Sotterranea (Underground Pistoia) is a fascinating one-hour guided archaeological walk winding beneath the city. The tour reveals Pistoia’s oldest architectural evidence—today visible only along this underground path that stretches for about 2130 feet (650 meters) under the Ospedale del Ceppo.

Visitors discover the city’s history from a unique perspective, particularly its ancient use of water through canals, washhouses, and medieval structures.

Along the pathway, being a true archaeological site, the construction phases of the Hospital and its relationship to the city during various historical eras are elucidated, with even earlier remnants such as a Roman bridge, wash houses of medieval origin, a city gate with access bridge and two interesting mills, the oldest of which dates back to the 12ᵗʰ century.

The museum itinerary winds along the ancient bed of the Brana stream, which flowed here until the 14ᵗʰ century flanking the walls of Pistoia, then diverted and reduced to Gora di Scornio, which is still alive and piped along this stretch today.

Daily tours, advance online booking recommended. English audio guide available.
