The Basilica of Santa Maria delle Carceri

Giuliano Sangallo's 15th century Basilica dedicated to Santa Maria delle Carceri is built on a harmonious greek cross plan with a central cupola

Piazza Santa Maria delle Carceri, 21

The interior is united by a Renaissance aesthetic. The majiolica frieze and tondos are by the artist Andrea della Robbia, and the church's stained glass windows were executed following a design by Domenico Ghirlandaio. An elegant marble balustrade by the sculptor/architect Buontalenti separates the western arm of the cross, and a magnificent white marble edicola designed by Sangallo, and inspired by those found in the Pantheon can be seen at the end of this arm. The ancient prison area can be found underneath the Sacristy.
