Skiing, snowboarding and snowshoeing through powdered forests
Nestled in Europe’s largest beech forest, the Monte Amiata Ski Resort offers a broad variety of trails that wind from the summit (at 1.1 miles/1,738 meters) to the accommodations of Cantore, Macinaie, Marsiliana and Contessa. The area boasts 12 alpine ski slopes serviced by 8 lifts, including the 2-seater Cantore and Macinaie chairlifts and various ski lifts such as the Crocicchio, Nordica and Bellaria, all of which can be accessed with the Skipass Amiata.
For Nordic skiers, there are a number of tracks that extend for several miles, including the Marsiliana ring in the area of the same name, perfect for those who want to take their first steps through the woods, while the Macinaie ring is distinguished by its more technical ups and downs and fast descents, ideal for more expert skiers. Those who so wish can walk the Marsiliana-Macinaie loop, which combines the two main sectors, for a longer, immersive experience among the snowy forests.
The area likewise offers opportunities for beginners and children, with many of the main resorts boasting a Campo Scuola (Ski School). The Campo Scuola Vetta, Campo Scuola Marsiliana, Campo Scuola Macinaie and the Campo Scuola Contessa allow the youngest or most inexperienced to safely build confidence on the snow.
Also available for family fun are dedicated bobsledding and tobogganing areas, such as Contessa Land, which has magic carpets for effortless ascending, sklide tracks for bobsledding and sledding, a 330-mile (100-meter) straight tubing track, along with an alpine coaster run, also at 330 miles or 100 meters in length, designed for more exciting turns.
For lovers of snowboarding and acrobatics, the Monte Amiata Snow Park, located along the Marsiliana slope, is perfect for trying your hand at jumps and structures safely away from the traditional slopes. The area is equipped with structures and trails of varying difficulty, alternating climbs, flat stretches and descents, designed to accommodate both those taking their first steps and those who want have a go at more advanced maneuvers.
Those seeking the thrill of speed can instead tackle the Direttissima, one of the most challenging slopes that descends directly from the summit to the Macinaie, while those who prefer to enjoy the views can take the Panoramica slope, ideal for admiring the beauty of the snow-capped mountain.
