The Archaeological Area of Frascole

In the municipality of Dicomano, you can encounter one of the most important archaeological sites in the entire Mugello. In particular, some interesting artifacts have been found in Frascole, including a large Etruscan-era complex.

Among the most significant structures uncovered by archaeological studies are the foundations of a large rectangular building, its size being remarkable by the standards of the time. Scholars have put forward various hypotheses regarding its function. Perhaps it was a place of worship—a temple used for religious ceremonies and rituals maybe—or it could have been a fortified aristocratic residence belonging to a family of high social standing. In both cases, the monumentality of the structure attests to the central role the site was meant to play in overseeing the surrounding territory.

In addition to the masonry structures, the excavations have yielded numerous artifacts that have helped reconstruct fundamental aspects of daily life and the activities carried out by the inhabitants in ancient times. Among the artifacts discovered are pottery shards, tools, everyday objects and coins—all of which provide valuable insights into the trade, cultural relations and economic practices of the time. Some artifacts even provide evidence of contact between local Etruscan communities and other areas of the Italian peninsula, confirming the existence of a complex and dynamic trade network.

Of historical significance is the Stele of Frascole, like those found in Fiesole. This 6ᵗʰ-century B.C. funerary monument attests to the presence of a burial site in the area and is now housed in the Dicomano Archeological Museum.

The site is valued not only for its archaeological significance but also for its scenic beauty. Indeed, the area is situated in a truly charming natural setting, characterized by rolling hills, forests and farmland that still preserve many of the typical characteristics of the Tuscan countryside. From the top of the hill, you can admire sweeping views of the Val di Sieve and the mountains to easily understand why the Etruscans chose this place as the site of a settlement of particular importance.
